Chesed at KOE - Blood Drives

Despite the large number of blood donors in the days and weeks following major disasters, the NY Blood Center's blood supply is periodically at emergency low levels. The best way to combat this problem is to establish a schedule, making blood donation a consistent and regular part of people's lives. KOE has committed itself to help with this essential social service by establishing bi-annual blood drives.

KOE / Shaare Zedek's Winter Blood Drive

Date: Sunday December 18, 2006
Time: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Place: Congregation Shaare Zedek
212 West 93rd Street (between Broadway and Amsterdam)

We are asking for your help to make this blood drive a success and are looking for more people to sign up to donate blood.

Please sign up for the blood drive by sending an email to BloodDrive@KOE.org or socialaction@sznyc.org.

We'll have bagels and movies for your culinary and entertainment enjoyment, so please come out and help us make this drive a great success!

If you can't commit to a time slot in advance, we will welcome walk-ins on the day of the blood drive.

Thanks in advance for your support.

FAQ About Donating Blood

Q: Why should I donate blood?

A: The need for blood affects us all. Nine out of ten of us will need blood some time in our lives. And one out of every ten hospital patients requires a transfusion. Although the average transfusion is three pints, some patients require more. Blood is in constant demand for treatment of accident cases, cancer patients, hemophiliacs, and for use during surgery.

Q: Who may donate blood?

A: Donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood within the last 56 days. People over 75 can donate blood if they meet all criteria and present a physician's letter. There are some medical conditions that can keep you from giving blood. The guidelines are set by federal, state and local health agencies. There are also travel histories that may temporarily prevent you from donating.

For more information on whether you are eligible to donate blood or more information on donating blood, visit the New York Blood Center web site or call 1-800-933-BLOOD.
