Chesed at KOE - Cafe Israel

Cafe Israel is visiting with the elderly. It takes place on Sundays at the Jewish Home and Hospital. Volunteers serve refreshments and chat with residents (many of whom have no other visitors, and some of whom cannot even leave their rooms). For certain holidays (Chanukah, Purim and Simchat Torah), there are special chesed programs with the elderly, building off the relationships created on Sundays at Cafe Israel.

Cafe Israel was KOE's first community service program and until recently was a requirement of membership; a distinction that serves to remind us that community service is a fundamental value of our community. If you are interested in performing a huge mitzvah with minimal time commitment but maximum heart, Cafe Israel is a great choice!

Cafe Israel happens on Sundays, 3-5 PM. You can volunteer once a month (the best way to really get to know residents) or once every two or three months. JHHA is located at 120 West 106th Street between Amsterdam and Columbus, on the south side of the street.
